Untangling the complex: molecular patterns in Trachylepis variegata and T. punctulata (Reptilia: Scincidae)

چکیده
*The Mabuya [!Trachylepis] lacertiformis complex is comprised of four species with a high degree of morphological overlap and a convoluted taxonomic history. Of these four species, T. punctulata and T. variegata possess the broadest ranges, together covering much of southern Africa. These two forms were elevated to species status based on slight differences in morphology, ecological differentiation and seemingly allopatric distributions. The molecular relationships of these two species, referred to as the T. variegata complex, have not been investigated. Here, we use both mitochondrial (ND2) and nuclear (RAG-1) data to test whether T. variegata and T. punctulata form reciprocally monophyletic assemblages, supporting species recognition. While we do not find direct evidence that these two species have a sister taxon relationship, our results are likely driven by an undescribed lineage within T. punctulata or by a sampling artefact. Based on all available evidence, we conservatively support recognition of T. variegata and T. punctulata as distinct species, but recommend further investigation of relationships within T. punctulata to resolve whether additional lineages are present in this group.

Intestinal helminths of four species of skinks (Mabuya) (Sauria: Scincidae) from southern Africa.
Intestinal helminths are reported from four species of scincid lizards from southern Africa: Mabuya occidentalis, Mabuya spilogaster, Mabuya striata and Mabuya variegata. The helminth fauna consisted of one species of Cestoda, Oochoristica truncata and five species of Nematoda, Abbreviata paradoxa, Maxvachonia dimorpha, Parapharyngodon rotundatus, Spauligodon petersi and Thubunaea fitzsimonsi. ...
متن کاملRelationships of scincid lizards (Mabuya spp; Reptilia: Scincidae) from the Cape Verde islands based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences.
Partial DNA sequences from two mitochondrial (mt) and one nuclear gene (cytochrome b, 12S rRNA, and C-mos) were used to estimate the phylogenetic relationships among the six extant species of skinks endemic to the Cape Verde Archipelago. The species form a monophyletic unit, indicating a single colonization of the islands, probably from West Africa. Mabuya vaillanti and M. delalandii are sister...
متن کاملA single origin of extreme matrotrophy in African mabuyine skinks.
Most mammals and approximately 20% of squamates (lizards and snakes) are viviparous, whereas all crocodilians, birds and turtles are oviparous. Viviparity evolved greater than 100 times in squamates, including multiple times in Mabuyinae (Reptilia: Scincidae), making this group ideal for studying the evolution of nutritional patterns associated with viviparity. Previous studies suggest that ext...
متن کاملComparative skull anatomy of terrestrial and crevice-dwelling Trachylepis skinks (Squamata: Scincidae) with a survey of resources in scincid cranial osteology
Skinks account for more than 25% of all lizard species; however, representatives of fewer than a quarter of all species have been characterized osteologically. All but a few of the available cranial descriptions concentrate solely on characters that can be seen externally on the intact skull. Mabuyid skinks of the genus Trachylepis are the dominant, fully limbed skinks in Sub-Saharan Africa, an...
متن کاملLost in the middle of the sea, found in the back of the shelf: A new giant species of Trachylepis (Squamata: Scincidae) from Tinhosa Grande islet, Gulf of Guinea.
A new species of Trachylepis is described from Tinhosa Grande islet, São Tomé e Príncipe, Gulf of Guinea. Tinhosa Grande islet is a small (20.5 ha), isolated desert islet used by several bird communities as a nesting place. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by its color pattern, size and lepidosis. Due to its limited geographical distribution the new species appears to be one ...
